Description

Uranus, seventh from the sun and of my planet series of paintings. This is a portrait of the planet. My intent was to try and capture the essence without capturing every detail. I compared sources available to me and painted my own interpretation of the planet. The lighting is pretty much just straight on. There are no stars visible, the size fills the canvas in the same manner that the smallest planet will fill it. The idea is to create a feeling of approaching another world in space. No clever shadow/lighting effects, no stars or "stardust" effects, just the bare face of Uranus.

Note that when photographing the painting the space background loses a lot of its depth. To overcome this, I found adding a screen over the background, enhances the background so it most closely resembles how it appears in person.
