This is an oil painting I made from a photo I took in Venice of one of the most iconic Venice images. Even a brief search of the phrase "gondolas in Venice" will return hundreds, thousands, maybe even millions of photos of this image and of paintings of this scene from various angles, times of day, centuries of paintings of it even. It is iconic for a reason: it is beautiful. I took the photo as my tour group was walking to where we would catch a gondola for a ride through the city as millions of other tourists before me had done.
I took dozens of photos of the scene and I selected this one to work from because the way the poles break the horizontal and I like the way the water is broken into rough back by the motor boats, then stopped by the floats it becomes more gentle, then you can just sense the gentle rocking of the gondolas stirring the water surrounding them.

David Dorrell began painting in oils at age 11 under the instruction of his grandfather, Ernest Dorrell (a graduate of the Philadelphia Academy of Art). He continued painting through high school still learning all he could from his grandfather. After graduating high school, Dorrell majored in fine art at Glassboro State College (now Rowand University) in Glassboro, NJ, for one year, then attended Hussian School of Art in Philadelphia, PA, for two years. Switched to acrylic painting during his years at Hussian School of Art. Currently Mr Dorrell has approximately 50 years of experience in painting, sculpture, wood carving, drawing, illustration and computer graphics.
